Who We Are
We are active, hands-on, all season, field-based volunteers who love being outside. We enjoy the comradery shared amongst volunteers and staff while completing work together. We hike multiple miles on foot to complete our work, while carrying our own water, snacks, and gear. We appreciate the rewards of teamwork and friendships that come with spending regular time outside on a team.
What We Do
Trail Master volunteers complete trail maintenance and field work alongside Authority staff. Trail Master opportunities are scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday each week throughout the year, with a few exceptions in winter and summer.
The program opportunities for these volunteers include:
- Maintaining nearly 30 miles of trails using hand tools
- Maintaining trail corridors using power tools
- Supporting invasive plant management via mechanical control (no chemicals)
- Weed eating trails every spring
- Maintenance of preserve infrastructure, like signage, fence, benches, and staging areas
- Keeping our preserves safe and operational for the public!
The Open Space Authority provides annual training beginning in December and running through Spring. No prior experience in trail work required - willingness to break a sweat and get dirty is a must. All volunteers receive Personal Protective Equipment required to safely complete work on trail. Volunteers seeking to participate in this program are expected to volunteer at least once a month.
