Butterfly Season in Máyyan ‘Ooyákma - Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve
To help protect this sensitive and unique ecosystem, in March, April, and May the trails will be open by reservation ONLY on Saturdays and Sundays. During this time, the public must sign up here for a docent-led hike to access the Bay Checkerspot trail, the Tule Elk Trail, and the Serpentine Spring Trail.
Docents, these are the times that the public can sign up for hikes. The 10:30 a.m. hike is a 5 mile loop. The other two are 3 mile out and back halfway hikes. We need docents and we need sweeps for each of these.
Please choose the time slot that works best for you, and take note of trail details below.
10:00am - 2:00pm, 5 miles
11:00am - 3:00pm, 3 miles
12:00pm - 4:00pm, 3 miles
These guided hikes up the Bay Checkerspot Trail will have over 500 ft of elevation gain. The loop hike has steep ascents and descents. Comfortable hiking shoes and hiking poles are recommended.
DETAILS: The wildflowers are mostly dormant once again so these are no longer called "wildflower hikes", but the public still need to hike with a guide to go up on weekends. You are their hero. Please take them on a hike!
HOW TO PREPARE: Please wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and come prepared to hike in the outdoors with appropriate clothing and sun protection.
