On Aug 23, we will be visiting and removing stinkwort from Santa Teresa Foothills. Santa Teresa Foothills was burned in 2020, and afterwards an invasive species, Dittrichia graveolens, or stinkwort, started to encroach into the area from neighboring properties. Volunteers will be working with staff to handpull the stinkwort before it blooms so that we can reduce further seed spread into this chaparral area.
The hike up the hill is a 1/2 mile and fairly steep so please be prepared with proper footwear and sun protection. Work will involve walking and hiking around, avoiding poison oak and removing stinkwort when found.
Please arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. so that we can walk together to the main patch of stinkwort. Parking will be available on the road nearbyy. We will also be providing a portojohn for use during the project.
Please bring sunscreen, plenty of water and a hat! Please note that youth 14 and older can join us with the permission and accompaniment of a parent or guardian. If you are interested in bringing a plus one, youth or adult, you must have them sign themselves up separately through this volunteer portal.
If you have questions or concerns, please email Kat Hill at khill@openspaceauthority.org.
