We are looking for three preserve stewards to act a sweep for the Tarantula Trek guided hikes on Sunday September 10th and 17th from 4:00pm – 7:00pm at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve.
As a sweep you will assist the docent lead, Paul Bilig, by hiking towards the back of the group, helping to answer questions, keeping the group together, and stepping in to help in case of emergency. You will meet with docent lead, Paul, in the overflow parking lot of Rancho at 4:00pm to check in with him and help great the public as they arrive.
Where: This hike will start and end at the Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve overflow parking lot. The overflow parking lot is about 200 ft down the road from the main parking lot, on the left-hand side. For directions, please use this address: 4289 Casa Loma Rd, Morgan Hill, CA 95037
What to bring: Please wear comfortable hiking shoes, warm layers, your volunteer shirt, a flashlight (just in case) and plenty of food and water.
About the event: There will be about 30 people who join the Open Space Authority docents for a slow, gently paced walk along Rancho Cañada del Oro's flat Longwall Canyon Trail in search of the elusive California ebony tarantula (Aphonopelma eutylenum). Learn about the tarantula’s amazing lifestyle and how these fascinating animals survive in the wild. Families welcome!
