Ready to welcome the public to an incredible new preserve? Want to help us establish success at a first-of-its-kind place? Then sign up for a Preserve Steward shift to patrol the Habitat Protection Area at Máyyan 'Ooyákma. Gather important data about butterfly pass usage as well as visitor impacts to the sensitive habitat on the preserve.
Volunteers who have completed Survey123/Butterfly Pass training are encouraged to sign up for this opportunity. If you have not take Survey123/Butterfly Pass training, our staff can provide this on site. If this is the case, please sign up for 1/13 or 1/20 shifts so that a VET's staff member can train you on site.
We are seeking three patrols each weekend day at 10 a.m., 11a.m., and 12 p.m. At 12 p.m. we need a full-loop ridge patrol completed; at 10 and 11 a.m. patrols may be full or partial (up to at least the first interpretive station on the Bay Checkerspot Butterfly Trail or Serpentine Seep Trail and back.)
On Saturdays you will meet up with a VET's team staff member and on Sundays (and Holiday Mondays) a field staff member will be your point of contact. At the start of your shift you will get an OSA tablet or phone for gathering data and will return the device after finishing your patrol. Please input direction and length of patrol in your hours report in your hours report; please use 'Habitat Protection Team' for the project name.
Please reach out to Kat Hill at khill@openspaceauthority.org if you have any additional questions about this role.
