Each guided hike at Máyyan ‘Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge will enlist the support of two volunteers to “sweep”. As a sweep you will assist the docent leading the hike by hiking in the back of the group, keeping everyone together, and helping answer questions. If any hike participants need to turn back early a sweep will escort them back to the parking lot.
New This Year: Each shift will start 45 minutes before the hike beings. You will meet at the Open Space Authority office (33 Las Colinas Ln, San Jose, CA 95119) where the docent leading the hike and the two sweeps will meet and carpool in one car to Máyyan ‘Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve. This will preserve the limited parking resources for the public. Once there you will TURN RIGHT into the entrance. Park along the right side of the road, not in the parking lot.
Please be ready and waiting to welcome your group at Máyyan ‘Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge at least 15 minutes before your hike starts.
Please pay close attention to the shifts you sign up for:
- The 9:45am – 2:45pm shift is for sweeps who wish to help with the 5 mile full loop hike. This hike has about 1,000ft of elevation gain. The actual hike will go from 10:30am - 2:30pm.
- The 10:15am – 2:15pm shift is for sweeps who wish to help with the 3 mile out and back hike on the Bay Checkerspot Trail. This hike has about 500ft of elevation gain. The actual hike will go from 11:00am - 2:00pm.
- The 11:45am – 3:45pm shift is for sweeps who wish to help with the 3 mile out and back hike on the Bay Checkerspot Trail. This hike has about 500ft of elevation gain. The actual hike will go from 12:30pm - 3:30pm.
What to bring: Please wear your volunteer shirt, comfortable hiking shoes, bring plenty of snacks and water, and any additional jackets and/or sun protection. Hiking poles are recommended.
About the event: To protect the unique and sensitive ecosystem at Máyyan ‘Ooyákma this Spring, the only access to the trails over the weekends in March, April, and May will be via docent led hikes. We will be offering multiple hikes every weekend in March, April, and May to try and get lots of people up on the ridge without disturbing the plants and animals that live there.
How to get there: Docents and sweeps are to arrive at the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority office at the start of their shift. The office address is: 33 Las Colinas Ln, San Jose, CA 95119.
From the office, volunteers will carpool in one car to Máyyan ‘Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge. This is to reduce parking impacts on the preserve and field staff. Once there you will TURN RIGHT into the entrance and park along the right side of the road.
