We need two Preserve Steward volunteers each weekend day to assist VET's staff with engaging guests at Máyyan 'Ooyákma during the busy spring season. Volunteers will set up the welcome table, orient guests as they arrive for scheduled hikes, and answer questions of public who arrive to the gateway property.
Volunteers are encouraged but not required to carpool. Volunteers willing to carpool will arrive at 9:30 a.m. at the Open Space Authority office located at 33 Las Colinas Ln. Responding volunteers may meet there and carpool to the preserve to save limited parking resources on weekends. Upon arrival to the preserve, turn right after entry, away from the parking lot, and park in the dirt pull-out on the Bay Checkerspot Trail. All weekend preserve stewards are expected to arrive before 10 a.m. regardless of carpool.
During their shift, volunteers will tally the number and type of their public interactions on the End of Day paper form and submit the observations using the Survey123 app at the end of their shift. App instruction will be provided on site. Video training is available on the volunteer portal. We do not need patrols on weekends.
Please note that preserve visitors will only be able to access the Habitat Protection Zone through a pre-registered docent-guided experience on weekends. We expect to see members of the public arriving who are not on hikes, who staff and volunteers can educate and support with accurate information.
Preserve Stewards need their volunteer shirt/orange vest, nametag, layers, calories, and water for the duration of their shift.
